"Make a way..." ~

The Lord has clearly exhorted EMI to open our doors to training international leaders...many who have little money to indulge in the equipping they hunger for.

Since May 2005, EMI is offering 8 days of FREE training to those who are able to travel to Cincinnati. We have been blessed and inspired by the stories of faith they bring with them.

Training focuses on one course per day in practical relationship and ministry skills. Starting with the skill of listening and growing in communicating care and understanding, SOS also teaches how to come along side someone seeking to change (discipleship), how to be set free from hidden beliefs that sabotage healthy biblical living, and how to reach out evangelistically in respectful relational ways without manipulation. Every guest receives personal healing prayer based on our Embracing God's Grace prayer teaching. God is faithful to meet their needs.

God always shows up for each guest in such personal tender yet powerful ways.
I'm happy to share with you the blessings of our July session of INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF SERVICE.

Emile is an evangelist who has a big heart for young people. He works as a DJ in a youth club. His vision spans over his nation of Burundi, Central Africa and expands to neighbors Rwanda, Congo and Tanzania where inter-tribal strife is often violent. "I seek to share the skills I learned with other ministers in my hometown, Bujumbura. I pray that many will be able to come to USA for this training."

Pastor Ral, from Asia, comes to us from a country now under military dictatorship. People are struggling to find work and food. He and his wife have taken in 30 orphans. Christianity is under persecution. He is the only Christian in his district which has no churches. His dream is to build churches and to develop young leaders to serve the Lord. While attending SOS, Ral was inspired by two things he'd never seen before: conversational healing prayer and childcare in a church. He is excited to take back the idea that a sanctified church can be useful to the community other days of the week as well as Sunday!

Soo is Korean American. She's on sabbatical visiting family after serving with YWAM in Kona, taking care of guest teachers. She was a perfect house-mate for our guests from Africa as she gracefully fell into the role of making sure they got to each EMI class. She came not sure of the direction for her life. "God has restored rest in my soul and spirit...and more passion for what God has in this vision & purpose to equip and mature the saints. Being here has given me excitement about where God wants me."

Christian is founder and president of Endtimes Christian Centre in Freetown, Sierra Leone. He is eager to bring EMI training to the local council of churches to minister more effectively to people in conflict and distress. "I need a team to help me do this training, and that God will grant resources to reach out to the four corners of Sierra Leone."

Janet, born in Jamaica, has been living in the USA and works as a corporate consultant/ trainer. She came to SOS specifically to help the reformation of a worship arts team of Jamaicans planning to minister world-wide. "God orchestrated this to be a place of infilling and refreshment...I feel rejeuvenated, refilled and ready to outflow."

Annie is from Bangalore, India. Her heart's desire is to work with women in distress by counseling and outreach. "SOS helped me go to deep areas of my heart and renew my mind. He brought healing to something I have struggled with the last 10 years. He has strengthened and empowered me."

Graduation includes our "Map Ceremony" ~ putting a pin into their country, where God has now taken EMI's training in healthy relationship and ministry skills.

Each time we hold these schools for international leaders and missionaries, I find myself immersed in the joy of connecting with family!

Even though we've never met before, fellowship with believers is truly sweet. The heart to heart connection is immediate.

Here's a little about our guests; please join us in praying for them:

Canaan Taiwanese Christian Church of San Jose, California, has contracted with EMI to translate training material into Mandarin and Taiwanese. Their vision is to bring this life changing training to Chinese & Taiwanese world-wide.

SAMMY LEE is from TAIWAN and lives in California. An engineering professor, he took EMI's LISTENING course 6 years ago. He came to SOS to learn how to teach our courses -- to join his churches vision to impact the Taiwanese and Chinese cultures with God's transforming truth. BLESSINGS: SOS makes me more comfortable in doing mission work. I believe Taiwanese people will benefit and get life renewed through my EMI training in the future. PRAYER: Pray for my own inner healing and to pass on to others what God has done for me.

VIVIAN WANG LEE is from TAIWAN. She is eager to heal and grow personally. She joins her churches vision to equip Chinese & Taiwanese saints in the grace and truth of Christ. BLESSINGS: Through the whole week of intensive learning, practicing and sharing in laughs, tears, truth - you can tell how much deeper and wider we have been changing. This ministry enhances the value and the way to live a new life in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit. PRAYER: Pray for my husband and me to be unified team in our dream to equip Chinese and Taiwanese.

ERIN WU is from TAIWAN. She moved to California 5 years ago and is Canaan's lead translator. She is eager this week to understand the meaning of the words she is translating. So many English words do not have clear connection. How do you say "empathy" in Mandarin? BLESSINGS: The classes make me have clarity on my calling and what I need in my ministry. PRAYER: Pray we continue to grow an dbe good models for students.

JOSEPH YAKUBU ITODO is from NIGERIA. He heard about EMI training from a Cincinnati mission team who spoke of life-changing training. As a businessman, he had the resources to come to the USA expressly to take LISTENING training. He is back with a vision to equip a core group who will train people throughout Nigeria and begin to transform a nation that has seen trust destroyed by years of political unrest and violence. BLESSING: I heard His still small voice instructing me on the next phase of my life. PRAYER: Please pray for my ministry, that I don't do anything outside the will of God. Pray also for Nigeria.

SYLVESTER ROGERS is from SIERRA LEONE. He is a civil servant and clergyman. He tried to attend this training last year. The ticket agent at the airport told him he had to pay $600 more to board the plane. This time he went to Liberia to find lower air fare. He is so delighted to be here gaining the training he wants to take home to his church leaders and to the Body of Christ. PRAYER: Pray for my dream to resource churches of S. Leone with trucks, equipment, materials they can borrow to evangelize and equip. Pray the enemy does not abort this dream.

GANAPATHY RAJENDRAN is from INDIA. He is an administrator, a gift he shares with one of EMI's trainers in India through Pioneer Inter Cultural Services. He is eager to experience the courses he hears others talking about. BLESSINGS: SOS training opened my eyes to see the hidden side of my heart. PRAYER: Please pray for the Lord to show me a clear vision of my ministry. Pray for my 2 children to complete their studies and for my wife who is alone for the first time as I travel the USA. I would also like to help raise funds for EMI's ministry.

TOM BRADY is an EMI friend from Hudson, OHIO. For the first time in 35 years he is unemployed. He is here to pursue healing for himself and his family. Tom is also open to this being a possible preparation time for his passion for African children. He dreams of spending this next part of his life ministering to orphans. PRAYER: Pray for enduring relationships in my family, that my children come to know the Lord, and for the next step God has for my life.

Why do they come? To learn transformational skills for healthy, effective life and ministry.
How do you SPEAK TRUTH IN LOVE, CONFRONT CONFLICT, RENEW YOUR MIND, and PRAY FOR HEALING? How do you teach others this journey to wholeness and freedom in Christ?

*Int'l School of Service (SOS) is held in Cincinnati, OHIO twice annually. The Lord told us to make a way for internationals who have little money. Cost of training is underwritten by donations. When it rains, it pours!
International EMI network begins in LA area

Amidst the biggest rainstorm in over 40 years in a desert area just east of Los Angeles, the Holy Spirit poured deeply into 70 lives!

Pastors and leaders from 19 nations including Chile, Columbia, Cuba, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Samoa, Zambia received 50+ hours of intensive relationship skill and healing prayer teaching with tremendous gratitude and enthusiasm!

Quick to Listen Leaders stirred discussion on what a healthy, dynamic church looks like. Skills for deep heart listening and the minister of care and understanding were practiced.
Speaking the Truth in Love brought loving accountability and healing confrontation into practice.
Embracing God's Grace taught the power of the cross in prayers of invitation for rebellion, forgiveness for guilt, truth for condemnation and God's power for bondage.
Saturday presented ways to inspire congregations to reach into God's infilling and OUTFLOW his truth and grace to others.

Pastors made a point of saying that they have never received anything so practical, biblical and helpful to their own lives and ministries. "This is one conference that will not have only a book that gathers dust on my bookshelf as evidence that I was here," exclaimed Pastors Jacob and Samuel.

Our hosts, Pastor Dan & Tricia Sandoval of Church on the Hill (Redlands) were ecstatic to see a 100% commitment to continue the Tapestry vision. A core team of international pastors has come together to create an on-going Tapestry network and begin planning another training event for next year!

What is the Tapestry vision?

Just about every nation in the world is represented in the LA area.
Many tend to isolate into their cultural groups, including where they worship. Dan & Trish seek to grow a multinational network of Christian leaders who share resources and a passion to reach out in the USA and overseas with the healing grace and truth of Christ.

For EMI this event could not have happened without significant underwriting of a partner church in Cincinnati and 5 trained volunteers and Board members who paid their own way: Pastor Josh Colón, Dr. Jay Diller, Dr. Bob & Janis Lerer and Randy Richards. This kept the conference costs at a minimum in order to be accessible to every interested person.

Only God knows how these seeds will grow and what fruit they will bear. At EMI, we are rejoicing in a vision caught and nurtured by faithful servants in the desert!

Geoff Gle - GHANA [front left]: Director of Co-Impact Inc., Accra.
Goal: Facilitating short term missions & training + promote public health + assist rural communities with educational facilities & library projects.
"My wife and I return to Africa [this month] to serve and lead in ministry. The church in Africa is growing, but we need solid teaching so we can be effective. The Lord gave me a greater insight into empathic listening and how to meet people at their level of need. I've learned that conflicts are healthy, but must be resolved in a biblical way."
PRAY: for effective Christian witness + impacting lives for God's glory.

Nok Prukpitikul - THAILAND (2nd front left): counselor to international students, Moody Bible Institute, Chicago.
Goal: Return to Thailand in less than 5 years with her husband to teach and minister.
"SOS shed a new light of the work & power of God. I became much more open to the Holy Spirit's guidance. I'm so encouraged by the way God revealed many great things to me. I felt detoxed in my soul."
PRAYER: Continual freedom from bondage of fear & worry about the future, clarity on our ministry as a couple in Thailand, a miracle for a family business, and salvation for family.

Kamola Salakhuddinova - UZBEKISTAN: [3rd from front left] Ohio State student.
Goal: I'm from a Muslim family and culture. I plan to return to Uzbekistan soon.
"This training brought wider understanding of who God is and what His purpose is for the world and each human being. This week has been a continuing of my healing in a safe, resourceful place to get love and understanding as well as to be equipped for ministry to Uzbeks."
PRAY: That I use the skills I've learned in my worship ministry and have a clear sense of God's will & purpose for me returning to Uzbekistan.

Bong Barredo - PHILIPPINES [right front]: director Asian Youth & Children Ministries, Bacolod City.
Goal: evangelize & disciple children through schools and camps.
"I've been looking for this kind of training opportunity--this is an answer to many prayers! It's great how the teaching is very personalized and the skills are so practical and doable! I am a better person, servant and child of God after my SOS experiences."

Many, many thanks for being practical Christians, demonstrating the Word in action. Your labour of love in giving will certainly have multiplying effects as I pass on the lessons learned from the Seminar to the generation following ours.
The biggest lesson I have learned is that there are some of you who are willing and able to open your hearts and homes to others like me without reservations.

SOS: Vision for Malaysia-- Jesus Bridges

Divine Appointments.

Are you also amazed by God's mysterious ways for connecting the Body of Christ?

In the case of July School of Service, Malaysian guests Yee Hwa Soon and Christabel Seow, connection to EMI came through Dr. Jay Diller, Soon's professor at Faith Seminary in Tacoma, WA. Jay has been an EMI certified trainer since the "early days" in Lancaster, PA almost 15 years ago. He has been integrating EMI training into his seminary courses, and is spearheading a vision for an EMI training network in the Northwest.

What brought Soon and Christabel all the way to Cincinnati?

Soon explains: "God answered my prayers through this week of EMI training beyond anything I could have imagined. I strongly believe that as God's chosen people, we are to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. We are to bear with each other, to forgive as the Lord has forgiven us. I also believe that much of the above has been taught cognitively, but the skill is lacking to live out the Christlike life in church, at home, and in the world. Not being equipped with systematic processes and effective tools means we will never be able to journey the one-foot path from our head to our heart. Praise God, I have walked that path this week in Cincinnati!

Living a life called by God requires us to manifest our love for Him in relationships with people. The caring community EMI is committed to is something I am willing to give my life for. God is calling me to be a bridge builder, a peace-maker between man and God, man and man, and between churches--both Chinese and English speaking.

Christabel, who describes herself as Soon's cheerleader, explains, "Our calling has always been a bridge. Through our hospitality ministry, we intentionally create the environment for different groups to get together. And we have a special passion to be the bridge between the English speaking churches and Chinese speaking churches. We see the Body of Christ being strengthened through the spirit of cooperation. What we have learned fuels our passion and desire to take the Chinese church with us -- moving higher, pressing forward..."

The Lord opened an unexpected door to Soon, the invitation to complete his MDiv in Tacoma.

God uses EMI to Help Kenya "Pull Together"

It's amazing how God works!

A divine appointment at a Christmas party in Cincinnati 8 years ago became an answer to prayer for Rev. Obed Ochwanyi. As a Church of God bishop responsible for 200 congregations throughout Kenya, Obed immediately made plans to bring an EMI trainer to Nairobi for 31 of his English speaking pastors and leaders. Four years later, he has sent 3 of his key trainers to Cincinnati for School of Service training. [John Achar and Walter Liatema: March 2006]

Rev. Obed Ochwanyi shares. . .

"The main need for all Kenyans is to come together to love and understand one another. To help one another. When people learn how to listen and to appreciate each other, they can "harambee" ["pull together" in Kiswahili]. Then they can share the same destiny.

The LISTENING course is very helpful to us, not only in Kenya but also in Tanzania, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia--because it teaches us how to listen to and understand each other -- and then to work together as men and women of God.

My vision is to have almost everybody in the 200 churches I oversee, not just the privileged few, learn these skills for life. We are working to translate the material into Kiswahili, and also to have enough teachers and facilitators to be able to bring the training for over 300 people, both in English and Kiswahili. I can see the promise of John 10:10 for the people of Kenya: 'He came that they might have life and have it more abundantly."

Brother Martin Odindo says. . .

"I came to EMI training at a time when I really needed it. This one week has changed my way of thinking and planning. It has helped me to accept my gift as a teacher as it is very clear to me now. I have learned to be more of a listener than a speaker. I was speaking the truth in anger not love. And I have renewed my mind to be free of past influences and have a fresh direction for my ministry, my family and my social life.

My dream is to support Bishop Ochwanyi's vision for training every person. We want to intensify training in rural communities. I want to apply the system I saw at EMI of lead teachers and coteachers, facilitators and apprentice facilitators--to multiply training.

Prayer requests:

><> Pray that the suspicion people have for a new things will be overcome by God's grace and truth for them. We are claiming the interest of the people for this training and the changes it will bring to their lives.

><> Pray for provision of volunteers and for Martin's work to translate materials into Kiswahili.

><> We are also praying for ability to duplicate course materials, as we are limited in the villages to using blackboards or poster paper in remote villages.

The scripture Brother Martin felt God gave him this week is from Jeremiah 3:14-15...

"Return faithless people declares the Lord. For I am your husband. I will choose you one from a town and two from a clan and bring you to Zion. Then I'll give you a shepherd after my own heart who will lead you with knowledge and understanding."

SOS: "DRESSED UP" TO EQUIP IN THAILAND

It has begun!

EMI's International School of Service (SOS) kicked into high gear Friday morning!

Our international guests from Kenya, Malaysia and Thailand arrived excited to see what the Lord has for them. On the weekend they took Guiding Life-changing Small Groups and Listening for Heaven's Sake. Each day this week they are learning a new course, so far Speaking the Truth in Love and Renewing the Mind.

It is always a delight to our staff and volunteers to hear from our guests how the Lord is meeting prayers they have prayed. . .and also about the surprises He brings that we didn't know enough to pray for!

I thought you'd like to hear what God is doing directly from them. Today I'm happy to introduce you to Gade Chew.

><> ><> ><> My name is Phuttharak Chewchengsanti, or "Gade," and I come from Thailand. I grew up in a Chinese and Thai community, so they have a special place in my heart. I came from a devoted Buddhist Chinese family; we worshipped ancestors. I became a Christian late in my teens. My family did not accept me. I left home and my heart was broken and hurt. God has called me to study counseling and has provided for me through many people to study in the USA.

I have just completed my Master of Arts in counseling psychology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago. God has laid upon my heart to bring the teachings I have learned back to my own country to start counseling ministry with YWAM Thailand and teaching at the seminary in evenings. I have seen so many lives torn apart and unable to be repaired.

I have been praying for six months about how I can train people in very practical ways. Then God brought a divine appointment conversation with a friend who reminded me of the EMI course I took with YWAM in Kona, Hawaii several years before. Then I checked out EMI's web site and contacted EMI. God has senses of humor and plan more than I can imagine. The Seminar was only 8 days away! I plan to have only one class because that is all I can afford.

I learned that for internationals EMI has School of Service that teaches 8 courses in one week for no cost to me. I felt grateful and appreciate this effective training and material that is very easy for people to follow and understand. As I look back, I can see many reasons why the Lord order my steps in this pattern. The United States has many riches and gifts that can help unite the Body of Christ internationally. I would like to take the MA from TEDS and EMI material and give my people hope and freedom in Christ.

Before I came to EMI I felt I am wearing the shirt and pant, but did not have enough training to equip others. Now after EMI training, I felt like God has put a suit on me!" <>< <><

Gade is a delightful young lady with a wonderful sense of humor. She was thrilled to learn we have 4 certified trainers in India...a "neighboring" nation. They will be a wonderful resource to help her get started in Thailand.

We are blessed and privileged to support the dream God has given her through donors underwriting her training costs and volunteers providing housing and training.

The Lord said, "Make a way for those I have given a hunger and a thirst."

A FEW YEARS AGO, EMI's staff sensed God's leading in our monthly "Listening to God" time. As an international training ministry, we had sent trainers to places like Russia, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Ukraine, Cuba, India, Australia, Kenya and Korea since 1989 -- we already had passion to "equip the saints for ministry" in the USA and abroad.

I don't know if you are aware of this, but training in the USA has seen a steady decline in this decade. "Busyness" seems to be the culprit.

Our sense was the Lord saying -- Don't fret over convincing people who don't know they are hungry. Your banquet table is set. Serve those who are clamoring for what you have on your menu...many are overseas. Many are poor. Make a way for them.

SOON AFTER we had confirmation. Twice.

A couple from India, Prem and Lilian, and then a Youth With A Mission team from Ukraine, Vicky and Natasha, asked if we would give them as much EMI training as we could cram into the 2 weeks they were in Cincinnati. The cost of their journey to the USA was underwritten by an EMI trainer.

So EMI's International School of Service officially started in 2005 as we taught these four trainers 10 of EMI's leadership development & healthy relationship/ministry skill courses. We also had the luxury of offering them each an evening of personal prayer ministry.

What a rich and blessed time with the Lord for all of us!

SO FAR: Through the support of donors, EMI's SOS has trained 28 pastors, lay leaders and missionaries who have come from (or were going to) India, Ukraine, Germany, Kenya, Cameroon, China, Taiwan, Ethiopia, The Congo, United Arab Emirates and Holland. Once they arrive in Cincinnati, we give them their training at no cost to them. Only God would come up with an idea like that!

On average, we receive a half dozen email inquiries daily for training from pastors overseas.

Many are responsible for a growing network of churches. Pastors struggle (as they do here) to manage difficult daily interactions. Some head up seminaries; they seek practical training tools for life and ministry. Others are lay leaders in new church plants; they need help with skill training for small group leaders. Others seek outreach ideas that work in post-Christian environments.

AS A RESULT of nine SOS sessions, we have seen

><> new pastoral training centers established in India,

><> missionaries equipped to offer tools for health & healing to missionary teams in China, Taiwan, Ukraine, Ethiopia and Germany,

><> church staff and nationals implementing regular training in Taiwan, Kenya, UAE and Amsterdam,

><> and new excitement for doing outreach in the name of Jesus around the world.

God amazes us with His working in our midst!

We at EMI believe this training not only draws people higher up and deeper into their walk with the Lord, it also ignites transformation, healing and unity among the saints who now have learned more practical ways to walk in the fruit of the Spirit, to be transformed into the image of Christ. . .to be Jesus with skin on to others.

We want to see the church become irresistible!

Y THIS THURSDAY, our SOS guests from Kenya, Malaysia, Thailand and Zimbabwe will meet their housing volunteers. They have dreams of growing healthy churches in war torn nations, shoring up flagging faith, bridging peace and unity in cross cultural cities & churches, and establishing counseling centers and orphanages.

Friday and Saturday they will gain a foundation of EMI skills in Guiding Small Groups and Listening for Heaven's Sake at LIFE Seminar weekend with 50 others from around the USA. Each day the following week they will build on that foundation with a new EMI course, and end with personal prayer time on their final evening.

May the Lord accomplish His purposes in and through His people!
